University of Iowa Creative Writing Summer Program
Interested in studying with Writers' Workshop faculty and visiting writers?
This summer, the Workshop will offer graduate-level courses in two separate summer school sessions for college credit. Admission is based on manuscript review and is open to all applicants, whether enrolled in a degree program currently or not. The postmark deadline for application to the 3-week or 8-week sessions is March 1.

A writing sample is required for both courses: 10-12 poems for the poetry sessions, 2 or 3 short stories or chapters of a novel for the fiction sessions.

Tuition and Fees
Residents of the U.S. may register for three semester hours for the 3-week session or four semester hours for the 8-week session. Tuition and fees range from $1,400- $2,600.
To look up tuition and fees for three or four semester hours, please see the University of Iowa Office of the Registrar Tuition & Fees schedule, and select the "Summer Session" option for the Graduate College. Next to "Filter by Curricular College," select "College of Liberal Arts and Sciences."
International students may register for three semester hours for the 3-week session.
International students attending the8-week session are legally required to enroll as full-time students, with 5 semester hours, and two months of living expenses and health insurance. The University of Iowa cannot offer or facilitate financial aid for non-degree students for Summer Session tuition and fees.
Class schedules
2022 summer schedule is to be announced
Last summer the 3-week poetry workshop met on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (CDT)
The 3-week fiction workshops met on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The 8-week poetry workshop met on Mondays, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.
The 8-week fiction workshop met on Mondays, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:50 p.m.
Housing during summer sessions
The Workshop will send information on local hotel and bed and breakfast accommodations to everyone admitted to the graduate summer sessions.
Undergraduate summer courses
Several four- six- and eight-week creative writing courses are offered for undergraduates (CW:2870, CW:1800). You do not have to submit a manuscript in order to take these classes. Check MyUI for course listings.

Housing is usually available to undergraduate-level students through Residence Services. The Housing Office number is 319-335-3009.
